Desirability is an objective function that ranges from zero outside of the limits to one at the goal. The numerical optimization finds a point that maximizes the desirability function. The characteristics of a goal may be altered by adjusting the weight or importance. For several responses and factors, all goals get combined into one desirability function.
Don’t become distracted by trying to always get a very high desirability value. The value is completely dependent on how closely the lower and upper limits are set relative to the actual optimum. The goal of optimization is to find a good set of conditions that will meet all the goals, not to get to a desirability value of 1.0. Desirability is simply a mathematical method to find the optimum.
